Solar Water Heating Technology

The technology of solar heating is basically that of taking the heat of the sun and transferring it to a more useful place.

In simple terms, this is often just a case of moving the sun's heat to a hot water cylinder or keeping the heat in a greenhouse!

Solar Heating Panels and Solar Heating evacuated tubes are designed to present as agreat a face as possible to the incoming rays of the sun. Water or some fluid circulates through the panels carrying the heat to a heat store where it is used as required.

The challenge is getting the maximum heat for the minimum investment in both cash and materials.. Tell me more.

Passive Solar Heating is the simplest, most widely used and least recognised of all the solar heating technologies. A greenhouse or conservatory are the classic examples of passive solar heating.

Adding a conservatory - as long as we follow certain rules - can be an ideal way of boosting a house's solar thermal gain. The simple rules being:

  • Dont heat the conservatory, its not an extra room, its a heat gain and generally not for use in the winter or cold evenings.

  • Ensure you can insulate the house from the conservatory, just as it is a heat trap during the day, it is also a heat sink during the night!
